Mother of triplets left destitute, pleads for support

A mother of triplets Jennifer Stefano, 29, a resident of Chiuzeni Village in Kasungu, has found herself in a dire situation as she shoulders the responsibility of raising her seven children.

She said in an interview that her husband abandoned her allegedly because he was not happy she had given birth to more male children.

Stefano said on April 2 this year, she gave birth to the triplets at Kapelula Health Centre in the district.

She said: “After I was discharged from the hospital, my husband claimed he was unable to care for the children. He left during the night and I have no knowledge of his whereabouts.”

Stefano said she is currently struggling to provide food for her children as her parents are also unable to support them financially.

“We lack sufficient food and the children have no clothing. The situation worsens each day and I do not know what to do,” she said.

Besides the triplets, Stefano has four other children.

In a separate interview, Senior Chief Kapelula said a search has been initiated to locate the husband and to assist the woman.

“It is regrettable that the husband abandoned his wife. We are doing everything possible to assist her, but the children require necessities that are currently unavailable,” he said.

Meanwhile, the police at Kapelula have confirmed receiving a complaint from the woman and are looking into the matter.
