Super League defending champions Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers’ dream to take part in the continental CAF tournaments has hit a blank wall.

Silver’s chairperson McDonald-Mafuta-Mwale said following a meeting they had with their sponsor Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) last week, it was agreed to shelve the plan until at least next year to concentrate on the ambitious stadium refurbishment project that they have.

“We have agreed to forgo the CAF competition much as we would have loved to take part,” said Mafuta-Mwale.

He said the stadium project is set to start sometime next month.

Wanderers general secretary David Kanyenda said they faced a race against time to get a commitment from a potential sponsor.

He added that they are planning to apply for Cecafa participation through FAM.

By cut-off point for registration on Saturday, both Wanderers and Silver had not registered with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), stretching Malawi’s period of non-appearance at the continental showcase to 10 years.

The last local team to compete in a CAF tournament were Big Bullets who reached the last eight of the competition in 2004 when they were sponsored by former president Bakili Muluzi.
