Skippers FC held defending champions DD Sunshine to a one-all draw on Saturday in the Central Region Women’s FAM League first round last fixture at Civo Stadium.

Fazira Chiyembekeza cancelled DD Sunshine Enelecio Mhango’s 4th minute goal with seven minutes to half time.

The game preceded a TNM Super League match between Mlatho Mponela and Moyale Barracks that ended 2-2.

With the result, Skippers have finished top of the six-team league first round contest courtesy of a better goal difference over DD Sunshine.

Sunshine coach Andrew ‘Aluki’ Chikhosi said they could have won the game had the girls played according to instructions.

“We wasted a lot of chances which could have been goals and the goalkeeper let us down,” he said.

His counterpart Collie Pofera said it was a tough match.

“It could have gone either way. It’s now an advantage for us in the second round as we are still leading,” he said.

National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) chairperson SuzgoNgwira, who watched the game with the vice-general secretary Winnie Nyondo, hailed the girls for the good performance.

“We have watched a good game from both teams and that really shows that the game is improving for the good of our national team,” she said.

Skippers striker Linda Kasenda leads the scorers chart with 19 goals.

She is trailed by Chiyembekeza and DD Academy player Gladys Malaitcha who have scored 10 goals each.

The league has since gone on a one-week recess.
