Germany’s Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Bäbel Kofler, has expressed satisfaction with the impact of the Social Cash Transfer Programme in Salima District.

Speaking on Sunday  when her delegation and Ministry of Gender officials visited the programme’s beneficiaries in Traditional Authority Salima, she said it was encouraging to learn about how the programme had improved people’s nutrition statuses.

“We are contented with how the programme is improving the decency of lives. Today we have witnessed how the programme is being implemented. What I can say is that the coordination between communities and the district team is great,” said Kofler.

She pledged her government’s support to interventions that target to improve health, nutrition and social protection and the wellbeing of communities.

Minister of Gender Jean Sendeza commended the German Government for supporting the programme in the district.

She said: “The programme’s beneficiaries are graduating from poverty as they invest the money in various initiatives.

“Today, we have interacted with beneficiaries who have acquired assets such as livestock and have constructed decent houses.”

Sendeza asked the German Government to scale up the support to reach out to other deserving households not on the programme yet.

The programme, which started in 2006 in Mchinji District, is targeting 8 000 beneficiaries in Salima with funding from Germany.
