Spanish delight
History will be written today as ‘Malawi, The Warm Heart of Africa’ logo will be displayed on front of Spain’s Segunda División outfit Club Deportivo Leganés’ jersey.
This follows the Spanish second tier side and the Ministry of Tourism agreement for Malawi to join the club’s rotating ‘main sponsor’ strategy.
Ministry of Tourism on Friday announced the partnership in a statement signed by principal secretary Chauncy Simwaka.
The statement reads in part: “In this way, the logo of “Malawi, The Warm Heart of Africa” will be displayed on the front of the first team kits during the next matches, as well as in different media, both physical and digital. With this agreement, Malawi seeks to continue with its strategy of “expanding brand awareness”.
Simwaka said the agreement will help to expose Malawi as a tourism destination.
He said: “This is a gracious offer for the brand as it comes at no cost to the ministry and Malawi is proud to be associated with C.D Leganes.
“We believe that this exposure will not only be able to reach Spanish consumers and the team’s fan base, but also all football fans by depicting Malawi as a tourism destination.”
The agreement follows a meeting between President Lazarus Chakwera and the club’s president Jeff Luhnow, last September in New York.
The two agreed to begin to strengthen ties as well as the search for opportunities and talent in football.”
Luhnow said in a statement issued by the club yesterday: “In Malawi, as in almost all of Africa, there is great soccer potential, and with this agreement we go one step further.
“We want to take advantage of this opportunity to be able to reach a large part of the country’s young population and to be able to start developing different actions”.
James Woods, who faciliated the agreement, said in an interview the deal will be officially launched this afternoon in Madrid as Leganes take on Levante UD at the Estadio Municipal Butarque.
