Sports Council spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa said in an interview yesterday that the launch will bring together key stakeholders from government, sports associations, athletes, development partners and the private sector.

“The five-year strategic plan provides a clear roadmap for the council’s operations and interventions for the stared period. It is designed to guide the organisation in responding to emerging opportunities and challenges within Malawi’s sports sector while supporting the country’s broader national development aspirations,” he said.

He said among others, the plan places emphasis on creating a vibrant, inclusive, sustainable and globally competitive sports sector capable of contributing to national development, youth empowerment, social cohesion and economic growth.

“Among the key areas expected to receive attention under the strategic direction are sports governance, increased participation, talent identification and development, sports infrastructure, inclusion, innovation and resource mobilization,” said Ntumumbwa.

He said the strategy also seeks to strengthen the capacity of national sports associations and other sports stakeholders to improve governance, accountability, planning and effective delivery of sporting programmes.

Meanwhile, a statement from Sports Council says the strategic plan was developed through consultations with various stakeholders to ensure that it reflects the priorities and aspirations of Malawi’s sports sector.

Reads the statement: “The launch comes at a time when sport is increasingly being recognised not only as a platform for recreation and competition, but also as a tool for youth development, employment creation, social integration, health promotion and national identity.

“The Sports Council Strategic Plan 2026–2031 is, therefore, expected to provide a framework for coordinated efforts among government, sports associations, athletes, the private sector and development partners in advancing sport in Malawi.

“The implementation of the plan will also require strengthened partnerships and sustainable financing mechanisms to ensure that the strategic priorities are translated into measurable programmes and results.”

Sports Council said the launch will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to familiarise themselves with oys strategic priorities and their respective roles in contributing to the growth of Malawi’s sports sector over the next five years.

“Sports Council hopes that the new strategic plan will help create an enabling environment in which athletes can develop their potential, sports organisations can operate effectively, and Malawi can enhance its performance and visibility on the international sporting stage,” says the statement.
