Standard Bank plc team were crowned champions of the Rotary Club of Lilongwe Charity Golf tournament held at Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday.

The tournament was organised to raise funds for this year’s dental clinic and a peace fellowship essay competition for youngsters.

Standard Bank clinched first position with 127 points followed by a National Bank of Malawi plc sponsored team with 124 points, Printer Systems came third followed by Seed-Co on fourth position. Malawi Defence Force came fifth with 119 points.

Nomonde Sambakunsi got the longest drive award for ladies while General John Msonthi (retired) won the accolade in men’s category. Nearest to the pin award went to Bridget Sinthampi for ladies and Chilungamo Chimwaza for men.

The Rotary Club’s president William Matambo said the tournament was well organised and patronised. He said the club was optimistic of reaching its target of K6 million for the two charity programmes.

“We want to make this year’s dental clinic a special one by reaching out to several rural health facilities. We have also planned to hold a peace fellowship essay competition for youngsters,” he said.

Matambo said the idea to spread out in rural health facilities has been reached to consider the poor in rural areas who need the dental help, but cannot afford transport costs to Kamuzu Central Hospital where the clinic is located.

Every year, the Rotary Club of Lilongwe organises a dental clinic in which people with dental problems receive free treatment apart from other charity events.

According to Matambo, last year the club targeted 1 300 patients, but reached out to 1 200 and that this year they are targeting 1 500 patients.
