Sulom promises improved fixture

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has promised an improvement in the handling of fixtures next season.

This comes after some teams, notably FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Wanderers, described this season’s fixtures as “chaotic”.

Among others, clubs raised concerns on fixture congestion and unbalanced fixing of matches.

Sulom president Brigadier General Gilbert Mittawa has also said draft fixtures for the 2026 season will be ready by end of this month.

He said this will be done to give teams ample time for planning in terms of logistics.

He said: “We are going to ensure that we have a much better fixture next season.

“The Fixtures Committee is almost done on fixture scheduling and by the end of the month, we should have a complete fixture.”

On the tentative kick-off date, Mittawa said: “We will be finalising the calendar as soon as the Castel Challenge Cup is concluded so that we plan all next season’s activities together with FAM [Football Association of Malawi].

“We want to have a well organised and managed season.”

Mighty Wanderers chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said in an interview yesterday that they expect the 2026 fixtures to reflect a balanced distribution of home and away matches.

He said: “In particular, Sulom should ensure that no club is disproportionately loaded with consecutive away or home fixtures at any stage of the season as was the case last season. Competitive integrity demands equitable scheduling throughout the campaign.

“Further to that, we expect a fixture list that is responsive to the broader football calendar, properly synchronised with FAM competitions and other domestic tournaments.”

He added that they expect the league programme to be appropriately spread to avoid unnecessary congestion and fatigue while  ensuring that the league does not conclude before all major cup competitions are finalised.

“A coherent and harmonised calendar is essential for planning, player welfare, commercial obligations and sporting fairness,” said Ndovi.

On his part, Bullets acting CEO Albert Chigoga said: “We expect a fixture that looks as an upgrade from what we saw last season. The last season’s fixture was chaotic. We don’t want to see a mockery like that again.”
