SuperSport to beam Afcon finals

The local soccer fraternity will have a chance to watch the Flames at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals after digital satellite television providers DStv announced that all games will be broadcast live.

Malawi will participate at the 2021 Africa soccer fiesta scheduled for January 9 to February 6 in Cameroon.

Nyamilandu: Fans will follow the Flames games

The Flames start their campaign on January 10 against Guinea before facing Zimbabwe in their second match on March 14 and wrapping up their group matches against Senegal on January 17.

In a statement, MultiChoice Malawi said: “All 52 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) football matches will be broadcast live on GOtv and DStv with several dedicated channels to ensure the widest, most entertaining broadcast of the 33rd edition of theevent beginning on Sunday 9 January and continues to Thursday 6 February.

“The power is in your hands, simply manage your subscription or get connected using the MyDStv app and the MyGOtv app, downloadable for free for iOS and Android. Stay home, stay safe and enjoy the best in sporting entertainment. GOtv and DStv have got you covered.”

The statement further states that top analysts and presenters would be on hand to deliver world-class coverage, while the action on the pitch ought to be no less stellar with top players like Mo Salah (Egypt), Sadio Mane (Senegal), Naby Keita (Guinea), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon), Riyad Mahrez (Algeria), Kelechi Iheanacho (Nigeria), Wilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast) and Trézéguet (Egypt) among those expected to shine in Cameroon.

In an interview, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu said this would offer local fans a chance to watch the Flames and teams of their choice.

He said: “It’s great that DStv has acquired rights to beam Africa Cup of Nations. This will enable fans that have access to SuperSport channels to follow the Flames at the tournament.

“Fans will have first-hand experience of watching their stars as well as other national teams of their interest.”

On his part, former Mighty Wanderers general secretary David Kanyenda, who is also a football analyst, applauded the move, saying: “Obviously, it means more Malawians will have a chance to watch Flames as those platforms are readily accessible.”

Another football analyst George Kaudza Masina, a former FAM acting general secretary, also said players would benefit more.

“Much as it will afford us to watch the Flames in real time, this will accord our players an opportunity to be spotted by football scouts as SuperSport and GOtv have wider viewership. This is the time for our players to sell themselves.”

When contacted, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation director general George Kasakula said they would come up with a position later.
