Take ID registration seriously—Lilongwe DC

Lilongwe district commissioner Law ford Palani has asked people in the district to register for national identity (IDs) cards to enable them to vote in the 2025 Tripartite Elections.

He said this in an interview on Monday as the National Registration Bureau (NRB) rolled out phase seven of the registration exercise in the district that will end on April 29 2024.

“ This is a rare opportunity that government has given us. As you may be aware, national IDs are important. They are used in banks and for registering people in safety net programmes such as the Social Cash Transfer as well as completing various monetary transactions,” said Palani.

He, therefore, called on traditional and religious leaders, members of Parliament and councillors to take a leading role in sensitising people in their areas about this important exercise.

NRB Lilongwe district principal registration officer Strachan Chisenga said the exercise will target those who have just attained the age of 16 and above and even those whose IDs were lost or stolen.

However, he warned people to stop cheating on age as well as avoid misspelling their names, saying it is difficult to correct such information once documented.

“If you cheat us on your age when you are young, you should know that such information will have an impact on you in future,” said Chisenga.

Speaking in a separate interview, Monalisa Mbewe from Traditional Authority Chadza , thanked government for the initiative, saying some people do not have national IDs.

“Some of us registered for an ID two years ago but till today we have not received our cards. We hope to get them now,” she said
