Tap water promotes hygiene in schools, communities
Communities in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chakhaza in Dowa District say piped water has improved hygiene in their areas.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, village head Chinguwo said World Vision Malawi installed a mechanised water system in the area which is supplying piped water in the village and at Chiwichiwi Primary School.
He said: “Previously, women used to draw water from a communal well. Such water was not safe for drinking. However, World Vision installed a solar-powered water system to improve water access.
“Now people are observing hygiene practices easily.”
Gertrude Moyenda, a mother of six from Amos Village, said the water has helped to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
On his part, Chiwichiwi Primary School head teacher Maclean Banda said the piped water has saved pupils from walking long distances to draw water.
“It is important for pupils to wash hands after using the toilet and before they eat food. This will be possible because of the kiosks World Vision installed at the school in 2022,” he said.
