Malawi women’s football star Temwa Chawinga sealed a fourth successive Chinese Women’s Superleague title when she scored the lone goal for her team Wuhan Jiangda against Jiangsu Suning on Saturday.

The Scorchers’ prolific forward struck in the 66th minute to take her tally to 27 goals, 11 above Zambian Barbara Banda who plays for Shanghai RCB.

Following the victory, Wuhan sealed the title with a game to spare as they have 58 points from 21 matches, six ahead of second-placed Shanghai, who were held to a one-all draw by Henan Songshan.

In an interview yesterday, Temwa said she feels proud to have won the league title throughout her four-year contract which expires next month.

She said: “When I signed for Wuhan, they had not won the league before and the club’s management told me that their expectations from me were to help the club achieve that feat.

“Besides that, we have also won the Chinese Women’s National Cup twice and I won the golden boot on both occasions.

“I am also close to retaining the league’s top scorer award. So, I believe I have made a big difference. It has been an awesome time here and I thank God Almighty for His blessings.”

On her future, the 26-year-old striker said she is waiting to meet her manager to determine the way forward.

“If all goes according to plan, our last game is scheduled for December 2 and that is when I expect my agent to come over so that we can discuss my future, but as I said earlier, I have nothing more to prove here, having won literally everything on offer,” said Temwa.

Alongside her France-based sister Tabitha, who is on a season-long loan at Paris Saint Germain, Temwa is among 30 players short-listed for the 2023 Africa Woman Footballer of the Year Award.

Last month, she inspired the Scorchers to win the Cosafa Women’s Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa, where she was named Player of the Tournament and won the Golden Boot with nine goals.

Earlier this year, she also inspired Wuhan to lift the  Women’s National Cup the top scorer award with six goals.

National Women’s Football Association chairperson Adelaide Migogo said they are proud of Temwa’s axploits.

“She has flown Malawi’s flag higher and proved that she is among the best in the world,” she said.
