Youths from Thondwe in Zomba now have a platform to showcase their football skills following the launch of a K200 000 (about $500) Thondwe U-17 Soccer Challenge Trophy.

The launch took place at Thondwe Trading Centre ground on Sunday and was graced by South Africa-based Hastings Fukula Nyekanyeka who mobilised funds for the competition.

The tournament will be supervised by Thondwe Youth Development Organisation (Thoyodo), a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

Nyekanyeka said the objective of the tournament is to uplift skills of the youth in the area so that they become national assets.

“There are no political connotations to this initiative,” he said.

Thoyodo advocacy and communications adviser Alexander Banda said the organisation aims at enhancing youth participation in socio-economic development of the country by providing technical skills.

“We empower these boys and girls to become responsible citizens. We have been running quiz, sports and drama competitions in addition to lessons in carpentry, electrical wiring, visual arts and farmers clubs,” said Banda.

During the ceremonial launch games, Kang’ombe FC beat Green Rangers 1-0 whereas Makupete were 2-1 winners over Thoyodo. Sixteen teams have registered for the competition which begins this weekend.
