Tigresses start OG Issa League with imposing victory

Listen to this article

Tigresses subjected Glass Bank Sisters to an incisive torture at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Sunday as they started their participation in the 2013/2014 OG Issa Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) with an emphatic 82-16 win.

With a star-studded squad comprising dropped Queens players Sindi Simutowe, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango, Beatrice Mpinganjira and Ellen Chiboko, Tigresses led 16-7 after the first-quarter.

Simutowe, whose unique scoring prowess seems badly needed in the Queens squad that has so far lost two Test Series matches (34-83 and 37-64) in Australia ahead of the Fast5 Series in New Zealand early November, planted in her team’s 53 baskets; missing the target only twice.

Tigresses coach Charles Mhango said patience and willpower paid dividend for his side to earn such a gigantic win.

“We agreed not to let our minds think about something else but the game at hand,” said Mhango.

Glass Bank Sisters team manager Veronica Chigaula attributed the defeat to the absence of all their shooters due to illnesses.

Meanwhile, Diamonds and MTL Queens are the only sides yet to play in the OG Issa League due to their contribution of their key players to the national team. Woget Stars are the current leaders on the log table with 15 points from five matches while Airwing Sisters are second with 12 points from five games as well.
