Tigresses marched to second slot on the OG Issa Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) table at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) on Saturday following dominant 129-9 and 85-20 victories over Aquaid Queens and Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters.

But leaders Woget Stars suffered a 45-43 defeat at the hands of Prison Sisters. This is Stars’ first loss in eight games and the first time to play second fiddle to the Sisters. However, they still lead the 13-team league with 21 points.

Tigresses are the only unbeaten team among the 11 teams that have played games this season after earning six-straight wins to have 18 points. Defending champions Diamonds and MTL Queens are yet to be given fixtures since they contributed their key players to the Malawi Queens squad.

Tigresses star shooter Sindi Simtowe dominated the affairs under the hoop, planting in almost 90 percent of her team’s baskets in their encounters. The combined defensive effort of Grace Mhango and Maureen Ngwira was relentless in denying a scope for their opposing attackers.

“We are taking no chances. We want to win every game by the widest basket margin possible because you never know the aggregate might win us the league title,” said Tigresses coach Charles Mhango.

Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters general secretary Kelton Gondwe, who promised to surprise their opponents, attributed their loss to Tigresses’ powerplay and the scorching sun that ate away their energy as their game was played from noon.

Following last weekend’s encounters, Tasaukadala Sisters have dropped from the second place to fourth with 15 points from nine games while Prison Sisters have moved two steps up to position three on 15 points as well, but they are better on aggregate.
