Travis Greene lights up Wendy’s Wandiyitana album launch

Celebrated American gospel artist Travis Greene on Sunday night unleashed a memorable performance during Wendy Harawa’s Wandiyitana album launch where Zambian gospel musician Abel Chungu also mesmerised fans.

It was a night of redemption and revival that sent fans in the 1 800-capacity-filled Bingu International Convention Centre  auditorium in Lilongwe into worship mood.

When Travis Green walked on to the stage, he was welcomed by Malawians who chanted his name with joy and the singer did not waste time.

He sang hit after hit while fans danced and worshipped God through music.

His performance was lively, energetic and almost sounded like a pre-recorded CD was playing.

Greene performed songs such as Waited, Nalekeremo, Intention, Turning Around for more than an hour.

While on stage, the American applauded Wendy for her compelling album and wished her well.

He said: “It’s my first time to be in Malawi and am so happy. I would like to encourage you that no matter what, stay strong for God is not yet done with you.”

Lulu and Mathumela Band as well as Paul Kachala were the only local artists that performed during the memorable night, which attracted music fanatics from all over Malawi.

After the audience waited for a while, director of ceremonies Daniel Thom, alias Super DT, introduced the first act Paul Kachala at exactly 8.15pm to perform.

The former Zathu Band member opened the show with his powerful vocals making the jam-packed auditorium to sing along to his popular songs, including Mwayenera.

Wendy Harawa later took over the stage at exactly 9.10pm with her band and she sang a number of songs from her first album and the new one.

Throughout her performance, she was calm and smiley and interacted well with an audience that was too eager to sample out her new music.

But after performing two songs Wendy paused and said: “I just want to thank my mother who is here and all of you for coming to support me. This is an emotional moment for me.

“Years ago, I made a decision to follow Jesus Christ and I have never looked back and I am thankful to God.”

After dishing out a few more songs from the new album, the Lilongwe-based duo of Symon and Kendall of the Nyemba Nyemba fame helped in auctioning the CD.

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary bought the CD at K16 million, Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda at K1.2 million, Pastor Nick and Rudo Chakwera at K1 million, Tadala Chihana at K800 000, Lucius Banda at K800 000 and rapper Gwamba at K600 000.

Soon after the CD auction, Abel Chungu and his band performed some of his hit songs.
