As the dynamics of war continue to change in the world, the United Kingdom (UK) Government yesterday donated a consignment of contemporary military books to the Malawi Defence Force.

The UK’s Defence Attaché to Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe Captain Andrew Bastable made the donation on behalf of his government during a ceremony held at the MDF Command and Staff College in Salima District.

He emphasised the need for MDF to understand the dynamics of unmanned aerial vehicles crucial to modern warfare.Said Bastable: “To win a war campaign you need to control the airspace that will provide protection to ground forces. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, we have seen the proliferation of use of drones where you can take the war to the enemy without risking ground forces.

“For the air force, there are contemporary books in this consignment on the use of unmanned air vehicles in modern and future warfare. The books will be of great interest to the students.”

The consignment also includes books on command post leadership.

Said Bastable: “If you go through the materials, there is a vast range of material there and all of it based on the advice of the United Kingdom Defence Academy and international students who are doing advance staff college.”

MDF-Command and Staff College Commandant Brigadier General Luke Mwetseni Yetala said the key aspects of the college are that students understand contemporary security challenges.

He said: “The books will help students understand contemporary security challenges. The books on air warfare will come handy because the majority of books we have cover land operations.”

College librarian Janet Maango also thanked the UK Government for the donation.
