Umhlangano fundraising golf tourney nets K10m

he Umhlangano fundraising golf tournament held at Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) on Sunday has raised K10 million.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, the festival fundraising committee’s chairperson Stain Singo thanked sponsors for the support.

“We managed to raise K10 million from the event.The K1.5 million was raised through auction of some items like accommodation for two at Umodzi Park. The rest of the money was raised from team fees,” he said.

The money will go towards the Maseko Ngoni festival event called Umhlangano.

On the golf course, FDH Bank plc team of  William Mathambo and Mahendra Thakur emerged champions.

The pair amassed 47 points ahead of second-placed North End Motors team comprising Justine Mkandawire and his wife Maina, who had 46 points.

On third position was Standard Bank team of David Medi and George Mbidza who also had 46 points.

Champions received K80 000 shopping voucher each, second-placed got K60 000 shopping voucher each and third-placed took home K50 000 shopping voucher each. The voucers   will be used at Sana.

Vice-President Saulos Chilima also participated in the  competition.

“We are grateful for those companies and organisations that sponsored the event today. It is good to support each other in such events. I also want to thank all golfers for participating in this fundraising golf,” he said.

Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani V also attended the event and was involved in the prize giving ceremony.

Speaking on behalf of the winning team, Mathambo thanked LGC management and the organising committee for a successful tournament.

“We are proud to have won today. From hole one to hole five, we had already made 27 points its when it dawned on us that we were going to carry the day. We thank all who made this tournament a success,” he said.

LGC captain Thomas Chafunya thanked various companies that came in to sponsor teams.

“Without your support, this fundraising event would not have been a success. We  also appreciate the presence of the Vice-President for honouring the event. To all golfers who took.part, feel appreciated,” said Chafunya.
