Umodzi Party (UP) president John Chisi has said he has a solution that can help Malawi to graduate from its stinking poverty and move from dependency to self-reliance.

Chisi said this on Saturday during a whistle-stop tour his party held in Thyolo and Chiradzulu districts. In Thyolo, Chisi stopped at Bvumbwe Market where a sizeable audience gathered and in Chiradzulu, he spoke to hundreds of people at Chimwawa Centre.

He said he has been a university lecturer and his decision to join politics was not influenced by fame or money, but desire to be part of the solutions to problems that refuse to leave Malawian soils.

He said the country’s main problem is that it does not produce enough for export, has no initiatives that consistently create new jobs for its people and depends much from donors.

“I am a solution. At the moment, I can challenge that it is only UP that has disclosed its manifesto and explain to the public how the ideas will be implemented,” he said.

Chisi said his government will focus on agriculture and industrialisation to revamp export and create more jobs.

“There will be no coupons for farm inputs. We will create a centralised system at area level. We will have a complete team composed of professionals to manage finances, administration and trained agriculture experts to advise the farmers. The committee will be getting money directly from government and they will be registering farmers to receive the farm inputs,” said Chisi.

Macra director of finance and administration Ben Chitsonga said Malawi currently has 77 licensed broadcasters, saying the awarding of more broadcasting licences is expected to increase penetration of information communications and technology (ICT) services in the country.

“To make the monitoring process as transparent as possible, since you serve the interest of the public, Macra will be publishing weekly reports on the way you allocate airtime to political parties and how you balance your programming among political candidates,” said Chitsonga.
