The Visual Arts Association of Malawi (Vaam) will from today hold its annual general meeting in Lilongwe, where apart from electing new office bearers, the association’s members will hold an art showcase.

The two-day annual general meeting scheduled for the newly constructed Nyamithambo Arts palace in Area 25, runs from 10 to 11 October but the art displays will end on the 16th.

“The official opening ceremony takes place on Friday at the arts palace where Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture Rachel Mazombwe Zulu will be guest of honour and will be joined by the Norwegian Ambassador Asbjorn Eidhammer.

“Activities continue on Saturday with the polls. 45 of our members, drawn from Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre are the delegates to the elections,” explained Vaam’s president who is also contesting, Chrisford Chayera.

He said the art displays will run for the whole week just to give people a chance to admire what the country has in store in terms of art.

Commenting on the venue which is a move from the usual town set up, Chayera, stated: “the idea is to introduce people and arts at large to this venue. We want them to take advantage of the function to sample the place, just in case they have plans to hold events in future.

“It is a good place and a good development for the growth of Lilongwe arts, as the city unlike Blantyre, has few affordable venues for many artists”.
