Vice-President Saulos Chilima led a field of at least 60 golfers  in a  charity golf  tournament  that raised over K5.7 million on Sunday at Lilongwe Golf Club.

Rotary Club of Lilongwe organised the tournament to raise funds for a dental camp at the Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH). Participating teams paid K450 000 each.

National Bank of Malawi plc team comprising Gray Kazima, Justin Mkandawire, Mahendra Thakur and Powell Nkhutabasa won the tournament played on stableford format with 93 points.

Brysons 2 team were runners-up with 88 points while Seed-Co Kalulu finished third.

In his speech, Chilima thanked the golfers for turning out in large numbers to support the cause.

He said: “The event is for a good cause where the funds will be used to provide free dental treatment for the less privileged. Teeth are one of the most important features in a human body and needs proper care.

“I thank you all for coming to support this cause. I also commend all the companies, organisations and individuals who have sponsored teams today.”

Rotary Club of Lilongwe president Vincent Sikelo thanked the Vice-President, golfers and sponsors for the support.

He said: “We have an annual project which we conduct free dental services at Kamuzu Central Hospital for those who cannot afford.

“We are grateful for the presence of the Vice-President who has assisted us to pull more sponsors. We also thank golfers and sponsors for supporting our cause. Our target is to raise K7 million and I think we have beaten that.”

KCH principal dental officer Collins Phiri said the oral health problem is big in the country.

“The support from Rotary Club is good for the dental fraternity because it helps the patients afford dental treatment. This event is so beneficial because the oral health problem is big in Malawi.

“Other diseases  have fixed partners and sponsors, but we don’t have that. In a month we treat over 2 000 patients with dental problems.”
