Women’s Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec) has donated eight phones to Young Women in Active Groups (Ywag) in Mzimba and Rumphi districts to facilitate reporting of abuse cases to authorities.

In an interview, Mzimba and Rumphi Wolrec project officer Prisca Nyasulu said four groups in each district, comprising 30 members—five men and 25 women,  have received a phone each.

“The groups will be using the phones for sending messages through SMS help-line and phone-in programmes to discuss stigma and abuse cases.

“They will also be communicating to offices or other groups on issues pertaining to activities they conduct in their areas through reports, photos, videos and audios,” she said.

Nyasulu also said the European Union-funded project will organise a training on how to lodge complaints on stigma and sexual harassment against females during political party affairs, saying the project is trying to create the environment in political structures for increased participation and leadership of young females.

Ywag member Patricia Chitseko from Ezondweni in Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District thanked the organisation for the phones.

“The phones will enhance our participation in politics as they will help us report any forms of abuse to authorities,” she said.
