A 35-year-old mother of five, Joyce Banda, has given birth to quadruplets at Salima District Hospital. Banda has since appealed for support, saying her family alone cannot sustain nine children.

“I already have five children and when I was coming here I was expecting to deliver a sixth child, but you can never tell what God’s plans are,” she said.

The babies, all boys, were delivered on Saturday night and were born with low weights of 1 400, 1 200, 1 200 and 1 000 grammes.
“I already struggle with another set of twins and the other children,” said Banda.

Maternity ward-in-charge Benjamin Mbalati said the babies will remain at the hospital until their weight improves.

Banda, a primary school dropout and her husband Geoffrey Milanzi, who did not attend any formal education, are poor subsistence farmers.

She comes from Matumba Village in Senior Chief Khombedza in the district and she can be contacted through the hospital’s spokesperson Angella Nyongani on 0888 596 995.n
