Women donate to gravediggers

Lilongwe Senior Citizens Christian Ladies Forum has donated food and non-food items to gravediggers at Area 18 Cemetery in Lilongwe.

The items included bags of maize, mattresses, pillows, sugar and soap.

Speaking on Saturday after the event, Lilongwe City Council chief executive officer John Chome, commended the women for the gesture.

He said: “The gravediggers are always busy digging graves and conducting burials and have no time to earn a decent living.

“So, I am touched by the gesture shown by the women to donate gifts to them.”

The group’s chairperson Nellie Victoria Mwadiwa said they made the donation  to appreciate the gravediggers.

“We identified the need at Area 18 Cemetery. These people [gravediggers] do commendable work as they also conduct Covid-19 burials,” she said.

The gravediggers chairperson Jason Bikoziti thanked the women for the donation.

“It has motivated us to continue serving the community,” he said.
