To meet Mukwenha in the singles’ finals: Gani

Two women golfers Margaret Mukwenha and Sophie Kalambule will be in the spotlight at the Lab Enterprise Match Play golf tournament grand finale on Sunday at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).

Mukwenha, who defied the odds to become the only lady golfer to reach the singles finals, will take on Furkani Gani in what promises to be an exciting contest. Gani’s casualties included defending champion Nestor Msowoya, who is also BSC vice-golf captain.

On the other hand, Sophie and her husband Medson will take to the greens to face the pair of Andrew Santhe and Adriano Guarino in the doubles finale.

Mukwenha yesterday said although the odds are slightly tipped in Gani’s favour, she is set for the showdown.

“I have been away for a while and that left me with just five days of preparation, but I have been going to the range to get my confidence up because Furkani is such a strong player.

“However, I am not counting myself out, I just need to be focussed. For me, reaching the final, is in itself a great achievement and being the only lady who has made it this far in the singles category should be a source of inspiration to current and prospective lady golfers,” said Mukwenha.

Sophie’s husband Medson was a model of modesty, saying the reason they have reached the final was because of his spouse’s good performance.

“She has been the defining symbol in our quest to win the honours with a consistent performance,” said Medson.

Interestigly, last year the Hara couple, Zachariah and Stella, also reached the final, but were beaten by the pair of Edwin Chipala and Donbell Mandala.

BSC golf captain Hudson Kantwanje said there will be individual stableford plate event for all those who lost on the way and also those who did not participate in the match play.

Kantwanje urged golfers to register through the entry sheet on the notice board at the club or through email. Closing date for registration is today.
