Tembeta: I am now a changed person

Two years after being fired from Big Bullets on disciplinary grounds, enterprising left-winger Wyle Tembeta has once again apologised to The People’s Team, expressing interest to rejoin the club next season.

The 23-year-old, who was offloaded early 2012 for failing to appear before a disciplinary hearing after he was found drunk alongside his four teammates on their return from a Super League match in Lilongwe, said he is now a changed person.

“I am now a changed person. I apologise to Bullets for what I did and I am requesting to be allowed back into their squad next season. I promise that I will never go astray on discipline again,” implored Tembeta, who is expected to sit the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations this year at PACT Secondary School in Blantyre.

But Bullets general secretary Higger Mkandawire said they would not take the 2006 Malawi Under-17 team star back into their fold because it is now a policy at the club to give no room to tried and tested players.

“Of course, Wyle is a good natural left-footer any Super League club would need to have. Nevertheless, he cannot come back to our team because our new policy requires us to take on board only young players that are coming from development stages.

“We could allow such players in the past because we were undergoing a rebuilding process. Now the door is closed for recycled players. We want young players that can benefit us for a minimum of five years. We need energetic players that can run for at least 120 minutes without difficulty,” said Mkandawire.

Bullets’ decision will also be a stumbling block for Tembeta’s former teammate Grant Lungu who has also expressed interest to revive his career at his former club that currently has some talented old-timers such as Heston Munthali and James Chilapondwa.

In 2011, Tembeta was so loved by Bullets fans that they whisked him from a training session with Blantyre United at the Escom Ground and carried him to their training venue at Kamba ground, where he was instantly forced to sign a three-year contract.

However, he fell out of grace when he failed to appear before a disciplinary hearing some months after he allegedly took alcohol along with Lungu, Jelesi Lufeyo, Yamikani Tambala and Chiku Kanyenda on their way from a Super League assignment in Lilongwe.

The other players were pardoned after attending the hearing.
