YAS urges people in Mzimba District to vote for youths

Youth and Society (YAS) programme coordinator responsible for human rights and civil society strengthening Mwandida Theu has urged people in Mzimba District to vote for young politicians during the September 16 General Election.

She said this on Monday during a rally YAS hosted to lobby people in the district to put young people in different political positions.

Sa id Theu: “The s e sensitisation rallies are part of our Youth Decide Campaign under the Democracy in Young Hands project where we are championing youth involvement in electoral processes and also encourage them to contest for various political positions.

“This is why we urge people to vote for young people to lead and change things in the district.”

Theu said lack of resources and proper manifesto presentations hinder young people from running meaningful campaigns.

“Besides helping young people on how to sel l themselves to voters, we are engaging donors to fund youths who express interest to contest,” she said.

On his part, Mzimba Youth Organisation executive director Moses Nkhana said time has come for young people to support each other during the elections.

“Time and again we have voted for old people who have failed to empower the youth. This is time for the youth to rally behind fellow youths,” he said.

Isiah Zwide Nqumayo, a youthful aspiring member of Parliament for Mzimba Perekezi Constituency, said youth aspirants can win if their fellow youths support them.

YAS is implementing the project with funds from the United Nations Development Programme.
