Members of Mwenenguwe Youth Initiative for Development have unveiled plans to cycle from Karongato Lilongwe to raise K60 million for the construction of a health centre in Traditional Authority Kyungu.

In an interview yesterday, the group’s chairperson Arnold Kaonga said the current structure is too small as it is just used for outreach under-five and antennal services.

He said it is costly for mothers and pregnant women to travel to either Mpata Health Centre or Karonga District Hospital whenever a healthcare officer misses the monthly outreach programme.

The health post set for upgrading

“Therefore, we want to raise K60 million to upgrade Kasano clinic to a health centre. We have concluded preparations at village level and the district council has given us a go-head to start the fund-raise on October 1 to 15 2023,” said Kaonga.

He has since appealed to well-wishers to contribute money to Mwenenguwe Initiative’s account number  1010123344 held at National Bank of Malawi.

Group village head Mwenenguwe said eight villages under his jurisdiction are ready to provide building materials such as bricks and dambo sand to the project.

“People from the eight villages have provided a piece of land and 150 000 bricks for the project. We are also ready to fetch dambo sand and water for the construction of the health facility,” he said.

A communication from Karonga District Council acting director of administration Martin Mkandawire has permitted the group to cycle to raise funds for the project.
