Youths urged to embrace environmental conservation
Catholic Relief Service (CRS) project manager Baxton Chirombo says youths should champion environmental conservation initiatives to help reverse climate change effects.
He said this on Wednesday at Songani in Senior Chief Malemia in Zomba during the graduation of youths that underwent the Malawi Green Goal environmental conservation trainings.
Chirombo said the youth should realise that effects of climate change will continue to increase if there will be no robust approaches to address them.
“Youths engagement in environmental restoration interventions is essential,” he said.
Fattu Hassan, one of the graduates, said through the training she is now able to produce fertiliser from waste to invest in smart agriculture.
She said the majority of the country’s population comprises the youth that are energetic enough to implement interventions to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“Through this skill, I will venture into commercial farming to become self-reliant,” she said.
Zomba District Council chairperson Basta Chirwa said the council will ensure that the trained youths pass on the skills to others.
He said Zomba is one of the districts affected by El Nino in the 2023/24 growing season due to climate change.
“The battle against the effects of climate change is winnable if the youth are committed to implementing interventions to restore the environment,” he said.
With support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the district, through CRS, trained 201 youths drawn from all traditional authorities in environment conservation management skills.
In recent times, the country has faced various natural disasters, with floods being the most prominent. Last year, the country experienced Cyclone Freddy which killed more than 600 people
