Rumphi district youth officer Misheck Msokwa has urged youth clubs in the district to scale up efforts in fighting child marriages.

He said this on Monday during an exchange visit between Kawaza and Chihanga youth clubs at Chihanga Primary School in Traditional Authority Mwalweni in the district.

The clubs organised the meeting following the rise in different forms of child abuse in the district.

Msokwa said the youth are instrumental pillars for socio-economic development in their communities and should be in the forefront in creating awareness on child protection.

He said: “The youth should also refrain from risky behaviour.

“Let the youth rise for positive development by pursuing vocational trainings, setting up businesses and saying no to child marriages.”

On his part, Rumphi Police Station child protection officer Willard Mmina expressed concern with the surging cases of defilement in the district.

“I, therefore, ask the youth to report such incidents,” he said.

Mmina assured people of police’s support in fighting the vice.
