Zim polls peaceful-Sadc ESN

Duwa: We commend ZEC

The Sadc Electoral Support Network (ESN) has described the Zimbabwe harmonised elections as relatively peaceful despite few shortfalls registered in some polling stations.

However, as the counting progresses, the electoral authorities have been urged to exercise caution to ensure that the results reflect the will and desire of Zimbabweans according to Sadc-ESN interim statement issued on Thursday in Harare.

Addressing the media conference, Sadc-ESN chairperson Steven Duwa said the long queues on Wednesday were a clear indication that the environment allowed the participation of a lot of people to cast their votes.

Said Duwa: “Sadc-ESN would particularly like to commend ZEC [Zimbabwe Electoral Commission] for doing their best under the circumstances to deliver this election. Their proactive role in keeping stakeholders regularly informed helped to reduce anxiety among stakeholders.”

Duwa said according to the observer mission, the Election Day environment remained “generally” peaceful and orderly and that voting materials were available.

“In view of the foregoing, Sadc-ESN would like to acknowledge the peaceful and orderly in which the voting process proceeded. It is our considered view that the environment proceeding polling day was relatively conducive to allow for free participation of the electorate,” he said.

Duwa added: “It is our hope that the result will reflect the desires and will of Zimbabwean people and that results will be announced within the prescription of the laws of Zimbabwe.”

“Among the deficiencies noted were inadequate period set for mobile voter registration which left out potential registrants, insufficient voter education, polarised media coverage and special vote which was marred with inadequacies).
