160 households get relief food

Karonga Diocese of the Catholic Church has distributed relief food to 160 households affected by a rainstorm at Mpata in Paramount Chief Kyungu in Karonga District.

In an interview on Monday, Karonga Diocese Caritas secretary Mwabi Shaba said as a church, they felt obliged to step in with relief food items to help households whose property was destroyed by the disaster.

He said: When our friends were affected by the disasters, we sent our scouts to assess the situation and the report indicated that they were in need of food.

“Therefore, we sought financial help from  our counterparts of Freiburg in Germany who sourced about K5 million.”

One of the beneficiaries, Regina Mwankenja said the donation came at the right time when they needed food.

“I lost maize flour, rice and some property during the disaster,” she said.

Karonga district relief and rehabilitation officer Shepherd Jere described the intervention as a true partnership between stakeholders and government.

“We appeal to other partners to support the affected families,” he said.

According to the district’s disaster assessment report, the rainstorm affected about 5 550 households in the district.
