Two people died on the spot and 28 others, including the drivers, sustained minor injuries on Monday when two vehicles collided at Msundwe Trading Centre along Mchinji Road in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police deputy public relations officer Kingsley Dandaula confirmed the accident to Malawi News Agency (Mana) and said witnesses identified one of the deceased as Thokozani Kambalu while the other one, a woman, has not yet been identified.

“The other 28 people were treated as out-patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital [KCH] where they were rushed to receive treatment,” Dandaula said.

According to Dandaula, the accident happened when a Mitsubishi Canter registration BA 3453 collided with an Isuzu IRF lorry registration BQ 8480 which was coming from Chitipi filling station road junction and entered the main road where the other vehicle was coming from.

The Mitsubishi was driven by Fredson Gonika, 34, from Tabuthu Village Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe and the lorry Maxwell Mungonde, 33, from Kapiri Village Traditional Authority Khongoni in Lilongwe.

  1. My in-law was among the injured and I spent the day at KCH going from long queue to long queue at Emergency, Xray, Orthopedics etc. The hospital services are really under stress in dealing with this kind of emergency. No wheelchair to take the injured from point to point, staff overwhelmed – how can we assist this section of our hospital to be prepared for this kind of situation?
