3 coaches dump Nomads in 10 months
Three coaches, including two expatriates have dumped TNM Super League giants Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in less than 10 months.
The development comes after Wanderers yesterday announced the termination of the contract with head coach Meck Mwase, who has been absent without leave for two weeks amid reports that he is in Namibia for greener pastures.
Mwase replaced Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan in May after the Burundian also resigned without stating reasons for his decision.
But the Burundian’s resignation came after back-to-back losses to Silver Strikers and Chitipa United, just five months after replacing Englishman Mark Harrison who stepped down in December 2023.
Mwase served as interim coach for four months after Ramadhan’s departure and was only confirmed in September after impressing in league matches.
But the former Flames coach, who was on a K5 million per month salary contract, parked his official vehicle at the Wanderers club house soon after the Nomads’ 1-0 loss to Silver Strikers in the Airtel Top 8 in Lilongwe on November 2 and disappeared.
Wanderers in a statement said efforts to contact him had failed.
The statement reads in part: “Given these circumstances, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Football Club has made a difficult but necessary decision to terminate Mr. Mwase’s services with immediate effect.”
The statement further said the club “is currently implementing interim coaching arrangements to ensure the club’s continuity and maintain its competitive edge”.
In an interview yesterday, Wanderers chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said the three coaches resigned for their own reasons.
He said: “The environment is more than okay. All coaches resigned on their own personal reasons. Wanderers cannot be faulted for their decisions.”
In Mwase’s absence, the Nomads have been under assistant coach Bob Mpinganjira, who led them to a 5-0 demolition of Mighty Wakawaka Tigers on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium.
The victory meant second-placed Nomads have narrowed the gap between them and leaders Silver to just four points.
Wanderers renowned top fan Yona Malunga in interview said they are disappointed with Mwase ‘sconduct.
He said: “At least he should have had the courtesy to resign properly rather than just disappearing. He should have at least told the club president [Thom Mpinganjira]. It’s very unprofessional.”
Malunga also dismissed suggestions that the supporters were insulting the coach after losing to Silver in the Airtel Top 8 semi-final and to rivals FCB Nyasa Bullets in the TNM Super League second round as well as FDH Bank Cup semi-final.
He said: “Nyerere zinadekhatu. Palibe anamutukwana coach ngakhale sizinayende mu ma cup a Airtel ndi FDH Bank. [Wanderers supporters are now disciplined. We don’t insult the coach or players even when the chips are down].”
On the resignation of the other two coaches, Malunga said they failed to cope with pressure at the Lali Lubani Road outfit.
Mwase was not available for comment.
