Four cardiologists from Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute in Tanzania are expected in the country today to undertake a five-day cardiology camp in partnership with local specialists at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.

QECH director Kelvin Mponda said in an interview yesterday the camp will run from today to May 12 2023.

He said, among others, the cardiologists will be examining patients and make recommendations based on the outcomes. There will be no cost incurred by the patients, he said.

Mponda: The door is also open to anyone
who feels has a heart problem

“We are expecting patients from all the country’s central and district hospitals. And the door is also open to anyone who feels has a heart problem. We will have both adult and paediatric cardiologists [specialists in both adults and children],” Mponda said.

Initially, the camp was scheduled for March 20 to 25 this year, but was postponed due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

The outgoing Tanzania High Commissioner Humphrey Polepole told journalists in Lilongwe in March this year that the camp seeks to address issues relating to heart conditions.

He said: “A medical camp is simply an organised event, whereby super specialised doctors from Tanzania and Malawi will be there to listen to whoever that would come. So, whoever that wants to have their heart conditions checked, you should take this opportunity, it’s free of charge.

“So, testing will lead to say you are perfectly fine or will lead to diagnosis that you might have an issue that requires a second level of intervention.”
