Former United Democratic Front (UDF) leader Atupele Muluzi says he is championing a reset button for a new Malawi to save lives of Malawians, suffering due to current poor governance and bad leadership.

He said this yesterday at St. Augustine III Primary School ground in Mangochi District during the party’s mega rally held to commemorate its 30th anniversary.

Atupele told thousands of supporters that gathered at the venue that Malawians are getting poorer and wallowing in poverty under the Tonse Alliance administration led by President Lazarus Chakwera.

He said Tonse leadership has failed to take care of them and they deserve better leadership come 2025.

Atupele said: “Malawi chose democracy 30 years ago to choose leaders of their choice to run the country while improving people’s welfare. We call this power to the people. This means you have power.

Atupele: There is no progress in Malawi

“But it is unfortunate that there is nothing that is progressing in the country. But, if you want change, it is possible if you can decide it [in 2025].”

He further said it is unfortunate that the once blessed Malawi is now enveloped with corruption which is affecting the development of the country.

“Malawi is engulfed with corruption. However, I have a hope that it is only UDF that can end all this,” he said attracting applause from the party supporters.

The former UDF leader, who is also son to former president and party’s founder Bakili Muluzi, said he has hope that UDF, which ruled the country from the dawn of multiparty democracy in 1994 to 2005, could bounce back to power in 2025.

“All we need is to join hands and make the party strong again. We need to reclaim our glory and serve Malawians from the current problems,” said Atupele.

Taking her turn, the party’s interim president Lilian Patel said UDF is rebuilding and remains a strong party. She said the party is poised to rise again and reclaim government.

She said: “We need to join hands. Let’s tighten our seat belts until we go to the convention to elect leaders who can steer the country.  In 1993, we were a force to reckon with that trounced Malawi Congress Party (MCP). So in the same vein, let’s join hands to take back government.”

Speaking earlier, the party’s nation organising secretary, Abubakar M’baya urged the party supporters to get united if they are help the party achieve its dream of taking back government.

During the rally, the party recognised it’s veterans by giving them medals.
