Manyamula Ward councillor Kefasi Chisi has bemoaned male dominance at M’Mbelwa District Council.

She said this on Monday at Edingeni Teacher Development Centre in Paramount Chief M’Mbelwa during International Women’s Day commemoration.

“There are 22 councillors in Mzimba, but only two are women,” she said.

Nyasulu speaks during the event

Chisi blamed the situation on culture where leadership positions are regarded as meant for men.

“I have been councillor for three consecutive terms, but have never been elected the council’s chairperson because the council is male-dominated,” she said.

Chisi has since appealed to people to give women a chance to lead in development activities.

Kavuula Zone primary education adviser TiwaleChihana stressed the need for girls’ education to groom future female leaders.

On his part, GIZ senior adviser Alfred Nyasulu said women should be allowed to take part in development and social affairs.

“Women can play a crucial role in managing Covid-19 funds,” he said.

In his remarks, Centre for Civil Society Strengthening executive director Viwemi Chavula said they want to take the message of women empowerment to rural areas.
