Chiefs urged to be apolitical

Deputy Minister of Local Government Halima Daud has advised chiefs in Ntchisi to be apolitical to concentrate fully on development.

She said this on Tuesday when she elevated Traditional Authority Malenga to senior chief.

Said Daud: “Chiefs should ensure that there is smooth implementation of public projects in their areas.

“Second, chiefs are the custodians of culture and should strive to unite people.”

She also warned the chiefs against engaging in corrupt practices.

On his part, Ntchisi South legislator Ulemu Chilapondwa (Malawi Congress Party) said the elevation of Chief Malenga will motivate other traditional leaders in the district.

A representative of the chief’s family, Mjumbe Mtambe described the elevation as a welcome development.

“It shows government appreciates the role chiefs play in the country,” he said.

Senior Chief Malenga, whose name is Frank Mkwezalamba, was born in 1982.

He was installed as chief on June 16 last year following the death of the former chief in 2018.
