Kabambe proposes minimum wage hike

 UTM Party president Dalitso Kabambe says there is need for “a reasonable minimum wage adjustment” to ensure that livelihoods of Malawians improve.

Speaking during whistle-stop rallies he addressed in Blantyre on Thursday, the former Reserve Bank of Malawi governor said adjusting the minimum wage is one of the important areas that his party will seek to address if it is voted into power in the September 16 2025 General Election.

Said Kabambe: “Life is so challenging at the moment. Ma lawians are facing hardships because of the state of our economy. When we get into power, we will fix the economy and also ensure that the minimum wage is adjusted reasonably so that the lives of Malawians improve.”

He said UTM Par ty appreciates the challenges Malawians are facing as such the party is keen on turning around the current misfortunes for a better Malawi past the September tripartite polls.

Kabambe, who was elected as UTM Party leader at the party’s national delegates conference in Mzuzu last November to repl ace founding president Saulos Chilima who died in a June 10 2024 military plane crash, said the party is also committed to ensuring that youths and women are empowered so that they should be a driving force of the economy.

Speaking at Zion in Chimwankhunda where Kabambe made his first stop, UTM Party vice-president (South) Richard Makondi urged Malawians to support the party.

He said the party has in place numerous strategies that should uplift Malawians’ welfare once voted into power.

On her part, Kabambe’s adviser Patricia Kaliati, who is the UTM’s immediate-past former secretary general, said the party’s leadership is what Malawi needs if the economy is to rebound.

Speaking in Nancholi where Kabambe made his second stop, she said: “The current economic challenges are not what UTM wanted. What we wanted and what we still want is for Malawians to live a life in which they can be able to afford basic necessities, be able to have food and live happily.”

Apart from Nancholi and Chimwankhunda, Kabambe, who was accompanied by his wife and UTM Party senior officials, also stopped in Mbayani, Chirimba and Ndirande markets.
