CDHIB hikes basketball sponsorship to K44m

CDH Investment Bank (CDHIB) has invested K44 million into the 2024/25 National Basketball Tournament scheduled for June 6 to 7 at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) Sports Complex in Blantyre.

The package is over four times more than the agreed annual sponsorship of K10 million.

CDHIB chief executive officer Thoko Mkavea yesterday said the increased sponsorship underscores the bank’s dedication to improving basketball standards in the country.

“We are proud to collaborate with Basketball Association of Malawi [Basmal] on this national platform. Sports unites people, build discipline and unlock potential, aligning with our purpose of driving Malawi’s socio-economic development through financial solutions,” he said.

“This sponsorship is a testament to our belief in the nation’s talent and future. We are committed to elevating the standard of the game in the country.”

Basmal general secretary Peter Gomani said expressed gratitude to CDHIB for the improved package, which he said will enhance the national tournament’s experience through upgraded venue facilities, including basketball hoops and court infrastructure, improved player resources and competitive prizes to recognize talent.

He said the package will also foster grassroots participation in the game through national awareness campaigns that will be highlighting sport’s benefits.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to CDHIB for their unwavering support. Following the success of the 2023/2024 tournament, this year’s event will be even more impactful as it will unite talent from across Malawi and showcase the sport’s growth,” he said.

“This partnership reflects the bank’s commitment to empowering communities and promoting healthy lifestyles.”

The national tournament is Malawi’s premier basketball event for male and female players, featuring top teams from the South, Centre and North.

The men’s category will comprise Bravehearts, Central Knights, CDHIB, Crazy Warriors, Disciples, FDH Bricks, Moyale and Nkhandwe while the ladies’ division will have Bravehearts Ladies, Cobbe Ladies, Kukoma Eagles, Lab Co-Flyers, Mikoko Mystics, Northern Fire and UniLil Arkangels.
