Malawi’s representatives in 2025 Confederation of African Football (CAF) club competitions Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers will each receive $100 000 (about K175m) subvention from the continental football governing body.

In a statement CAF says it has doubled the subvention from $50 000.

The statement reads in part: “CAF is pleased with the Governance Compliance Committee report on governance non-compliance or weaknesses within the CAF secretariat.

“CAF is in the process of increasing by 100 percent its financial contributions to over 130 African clubs participating in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.”

The statement further quotes CAF president Patrice Motsepe as saying the increase is because the Governance Compliance Committee report showed that CAF had scored highly in financial prudence.

He said: “CAF is very pleased with the Governance Compliance Committee report on governance non-compliance or weaknesses within the CAF Secretariat and will implement the governance recommendations that are contained in this report.

“I am very happy with the processes underway to increase by 100 percent CAF’s financial contributions to each of the approximately 130 African clubs that participate in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.For the first time, CAF contributed $50 000 to each Club. Each Club should now receive $100 000.”

The 2023 TNM Super League champions FCB Nyasa Bullets were the first to receive the newly-introduced subvention last year.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka in an interview confirmed receiving communication on the increment from CAF.

He said: “These are resolutions from the recent CAF congress held in Rabat, Morocco.

“It’s a welcome development.  It will go a long way in easing financial challenges the teams face when participating in CAF competitions.”

Mighty Wanderers chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi said the increase in subvention is a big boost for the Nomads.

He said: “This is an awesome development. Participating in CAF Confederation Cup competition demands significant financial investment; so, this kind of support is a big boost. As participants this year, we are truly delighted and motivated. We’re looking forward to competing and representing the country with pride.”

On his part, Silver chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba said they were also aware of the CAF subvention increment.
