Msuku said that the project, which was being implemented in Traditional Authority M’mbelwa and will phase out this year, has helped 1 009 children to access early childhood development materials since 2023.

“We have established adolescent groups and conducted training for adolescent girls’ mentors for child protection. We aimed to create 20 water and sanitation clubs and we have created 19 which have led to improved hygiene and sanitation in schools” he said.

In an interview, World Relief Malawi programmes manager George Mkandawire said that the project has achieved most of its targets.

“We have seen the impact of the project. The project drilled 28 boreholes, trained case managers who now identify and report child abuse cases,” he said.

Mkandawire said before the project was implemented only 5 000 households had toilets, but now over 9 000 have constructed new ones.

M’Mbelwa District Council principal education officer Epmak Lwanja, commended the project and its impact in the district.

“We will ensure that the project is sustained and will continue to monitor the activities in the communities” said Lwanja.

Child Development and Protection Project was funded by the Kindernothilfe Luxemborg
