Bullets, Wanderers chase FDH Bank Cup semis’ berths

Blantyre–based giants FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Wanderers could set up another derby if they progress in this weekend’s FDH Bank Cup quarter-final fixtures.

Bullets host Kamuzu Barracks (KB) this afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre while Wanderers visit Creck Sporting Club at Dimba Stadium in Mchinji tomorrow.

Both fixtures pit contrasting football philosophies with the outcomes likely to hinge on tactical discipline and execution in key areas of the pitch.

Encounters between Bullets and KB are often explosive. In their last seven meetings across all competitions, Bullets have won four and drawn three, with KB yet to register a victory.

The People’s Team have netted nine goals compared to KB’s four, underlining their attacking superiority.

However, the Lilongwe-based soldiers have proved stubborn opponents, frustrating Bullets in several tightly-contested draws.

While rallying his troops, Bullets assistant coach Gilbert Chirwa cautioned against complacency.

He said: “We are aware that it is a very difficult game, a very important game for us.

“About the history we have of beating KB in cup games, we’re not going to base on that one because this is a cup game, we just take it as it comes. So we’ve advised the boys to be serious and not be complacent.

“And we know for sure our boys are going to do a good job for us.”

The latest meeting between the two sides saw Bullets triumph 4-0 in a TNM Super League match at Kamuzu Stadium in May 2025 and 2-0 in the 2024 Airtel Top 8 semi-final.

While Bullets are in fine form, topping the TNM Super League table and fresh from a 2-1 win over Silver Strikers, KB have been struggling, picking up just one point in their last three games.

KB coach Nicholas Mhango admitted his side must improve to stand a chance.

“Things are not looking good. We need to improve. We have been talking to the boys on our shortfalls. I am sure they understand the situation and the need for us to punch above our grade.”

Mhango will rely on his side’s defensive organisation, compact structure, and quick counterattacks.

The soldiers often deploy a 4-2-3-1 setup, pressing selectively and breaking with pace on the wings.

Key men Zeliatt Nkhoma and China Chirwa will be central to exploiting Bullets’ high defensive line while set-pieces and long-range efforts could offer their best scoring chances, areas where Bullets have occasionally shown vulnerability.

On the other hand, Bullets’ possession-based approach thrives on fluid passing, off-ball movement and flank overloads.

The return of Chikumbutso Salima from injury and the creativity of Peter Banda will stretch KB’s defence while strikers Hassan Kajoke and Babatunde Adepoju will look to exploit gaps upfront.

Meanwhile, tomorrow’s clash at Dimba Stadium pits Creck Sporting Club and Wanderers, two teams on opposite ends of the football spectrum.

Wanderers are unbeaten in the TNM Super League and have only lost once in all competitions this season, against Karonga United in the Airtel Top 8 quarter-final second leg.
