FAM asks for K600m bailout

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has asked the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture to help them source K600 million extra funding towards settling debts owed to service providers.

The debt was incurred through national football teams’ foreign travel and accommodation expenses.

FAM president Fleetwood Haiya made the request when he met the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata on Friday at Capital Hill in Lilongwe where he was accompanied by the association’s first vice-president Christopher Madalitso Kuyera.

The ministry’s spokesperson Macmillan Mwale said in an interview yesterday that during the meeting, the minister committed help on the matter.

“The minister, however, asked the FAM president to make a formal request and provide details through the Malawi National Council of Sports so that it can be taken up with relevant authorities, in this case Treasury,” he said.

During the meeting, Gangata also urged FAM to intensify initiatives aimed at mobilising resources to support national football teams.

“We are ready to join forces with FAM to ensure that adequate resources are available for our different national teams,” he said.

Haiya thanked the minister for his commitment to help in taking up the matter and said they will proceed as advised by the minister.

In the 2026/27 proposed National Budget, FAM has been allocated K3 billion for national football teams.
