Tabitha pleads for Scorchers support
The Scorchers captain Tabitha Chawinga has called on Malawians to financially support the Malawi National Women’s Football Team during the send-off and fundraising dinner tonight at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
The event, which will be graced by First Lady Gertrude Mutharika as the guest of honour, marks the conclusion of the Scorchers’ preparations ahead of their historic appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals scheduled for July 25 to August 16 in Morocco.

The fundraising campaign targets to raise at least K1 billion for the team’s accommodation, camping and air travel.
Said Chawinga: “I urge fellow women to follow the First Lady’s gesture of supporting us through attending the fundraising dinner this Friday.
“Malawians of goodwill should come in large numbers to support us by attending or buying a table at the dinner.
“We are going to Wafcon with confidence of doing well, but we need support to realise our dream.”
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) commercial and marketing manager Mayamiko Kafwamba yesterday said they will also use the dinner as a platform to unveil and auction the Scorchers’ Wafcon limited edition jersey.
“We have only 500 pieces of the replicas which will be auctioned after unveiling the jersey,” he said.
Meanwhile, Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili has said that preparations have been well ahead of Wafcon.
The Scorchers will face defending champions Nigeria in their Group C opener on July 28 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
They will then face Egypt on August 1 at Moulay Hassan Stadium before wrapping up their group stage against regional rivals Zambia on August 5 at Al Madina Stadium.
The top two teams from each group, together with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.
