Training key to successful 2014 polls—MEC

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged its members of staff to take a training of trainer’s in voter registration workshop seriously, saying any mistake could affect the 2014 tripartite elections.

Speaking during the official opening of the workshop in Blantyre on Thursday, MEC commissioner Elvey Mtafu said the organisation wants to have a credible voters roll.

“I urge you that wherever and whenever you are in doubt or you have not understood anything, please do not hesitate to ask for clarification because when you go out there in the field, you will also meet people in doubt. There is no room for you to assume how something can be done, you just have to get everything right,” she said.

Mtafu further said the forthcoming voter registration exercise depends on successful training of registration staff.

“As the country prepares for the country’s first-ever tripartite elections, I would like to remind you that the way we will conduct the registration exercise will greatly contribute to the assessment of the credibility of the 2014 polls.

The two-day training attracted over 40 MEC staff members.
