ACB dares youths in corruption war

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has challenged youths to fight corruption to avoid inheriting a broken and painful future.

ACB director general Reyneck Matemba made the remarks yesterday during a two-day first-ever National Anti-Corruption Youth Forum in Mponela, Dowa.

Matemba addressing the meeting

“Most of the corruption takes place among older citizens but these are going and it’s you, the youth, who will remain and bear all the wounds that this corruption will leave behind. So, it’s your time to wake up and fight,” he urged.

Matemba stressed that Malawi’s hope for a bright future partly depends on youths who have zero-tolerance for corruption and who will be ready to detect and root out the vice anywhere in the country.

He said: “What we are focusing on now is that the youth should be in the forefront in this fight because they have not yet tasted the ‘sweetness’ of corruption. As such, training them now will make them grow with no thirst for the vice.”

The ACB chief described corruption as a serious threat to national development saying perpetrators greedily gobble up public resources meant to secure and improve ordinary citizens’ lives.

National Youth Forum chairperson Lusubilo Ziba said the youth are already feeling the pinch of corruption, as many of them cannot afford what corrupt leaders demand in return for favours.

“That is why unemployment is not ending and many youths are still idle,” she said.

Chief youth officer in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Deus Lipenga hailed the move taken by ACB to put the youth in the forefront, saying it will create a better understanding of the extent and danger of corruption.

He said most policies in the country fail to yield results because the youth are left at the receiving end, instead of giving them effective training on how to implement the policies.

The workshop has drawn together 50 participants from all districts in the country.
