The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has finally set a date for its convention. It will take place between August 23 and 24 this year.

Initially, the convention was supposed to be convened on December 29 last year, but was shifted to April this year.

It was postponed again and the party says, it will be held in August.

Secretary general Khwauli Msiska disclosed on Wednesday the convention will take place at Marymount Secondary in Mzuzu where all positions will be up for grabs.

The reason for the previous postponement was due to lack of funds. Asked if the party has found enough money for the convention, Msiska was sceptical but optimistic.

“We have made a lot of progress because most of the money that was needed has been found. There are also some pledges which we hope will be fulfilled soon,” he said.

Asked if the party is expected to choose a presidential candidate considering that chairman Enoch Chihana suggested that the party should form an alliance with the People’s Party (PP), Msiska said the convention is due to decide.

“These are policy issues which will be discussed and decided by the convention,” he said.

Members have shown interest to contest in various positions, but have not yet filled forms, according to Msiska.

Msiska was however fired in a Cabinet reshuffle announced on Monday this week.
