The Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has said it will soon conduct primaries despite leadership problems that have rocked the party.

Pre-crisis secretary general Khwauli Msiska announced on Wednesday that the party has no choice but to hold primaries and be ready for the May 20 Tripartite Elections.

“We have not yet resolved the leadership problem, but we think this should not prevent the party from moving forward. We will conduct primaries to find candidates who will contest in this year’s general elections,” said Msiska.

He disclosed that primaries will be conducted in constituencies where there is more than one candidate while in others, candidates will just be nominated.

Aford held its convention last September at Mary Mount Secondary School in Mzuzu.

However, disagreements rose after party chairperson, who was contesting as president, Enoch Chihana, questioned the participation of National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) party at the convention.

As a result, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officials, who were invited to conduct elections, and some senior party officials left the venue.

Later, the party appointed Moses Mkandawire of Livingstonia Synod as returning officer and went ahead with the convention which elected Chihana as president.
