‘Artists are fifth arm of government’

Local artists have been described as the ‘fifth arm of the government’ because of the tremendous role they play in the country’s socioeconomic development.

Department of Disaster Management Affairs deputy director of disaster preparedness Fedson Chikuse, said this on Monday in Lilongwe when he received a donation of relief items from musicians on behalf of government.

He said: “It gives me pleasure to receive the donation of these relief items. This is a timely donation which will go a long way to address the needs of the people who have been affected by the Tropical Storm Ana-induced heavy rains and floods.

“Most importantly, let me commend the local artists for their response. They are the fifth arm of government because they make an immense contribution towards the country’s social-economic development.”

Led by events manager Levi Msakambewa, the musicians organised a fundraising show for the survivors of the Tropical Storm Ana in  the Shire Valley on February 28 under the banner United for Floods Victims.

The items included 100 bags of maize, 500 plastic cups and second-hand clothes.

Commenting on the donation by the musicians, Ngomana wa Sena chairperson Madani Fatchi said it demonstrated the power of artists.

“I have been invited all the way from Shire Valley to be part of this symbolic function. I personally thank the musicians for this great gesture which simply demonstrates their capability to change lives of people,” he said.

Gospel musician Thocco Katimba said local artists are ready to work with government to cushion the shocks that vulnerable people are subjected to.

“Artists are partners in development. There is more they can do if government can create an enabling environment for them. For example, we would have fundraised more than K2.5 million if artists were engaged in economic activities,” said Katimba.

The handover event was held at Vox Populi in Lilongwe and some of the delegates present were Lilongwe City mayor Richard Banda and his deputy Esther Sagawa. The event was spiced up by music performances by Joe Kellz, Marvelous Deeds and Dr. Joram, among others.
